Look at a world map for a moment. Every coastline on it has a name, every island has a shape, and a phone in your pocket can tell you where you are to within a few metres.

Now take all of that away.

You are standing on a beach five hundred years ago. You know your own coast well. You know the ports your family's boats visit. Beyond that, the sea just keeps going, and nobody you have ever met has come back from the far side of it.

Millions of people did. Not because they were braver than you, but because they wanted something: pepper, or a holy city, or land to farm, or an answer, or simply to get away. This topic is about what sent them out, and about everything that happened afterwards, to them and to the people they met.

Chapter 01

What 'exploration' means, and the problem with 'discovery'

Exploration means travelling to find out what is there. It is one of the oldest things humans do. The first people to walk out of Africa were explorers. So were the sailors who found their way to the islands of the Pacific in outrigger canoes, thousands of years before Europe had ocean-going ships.

So when a history book says a place was discovered in a particular year, stop and ask one question:

Discovered by whom?

Because almost every place a European ship reached between 1400 and 1800 already had people living in it. They had names for their own rivers and mountains. They had kings, farms, markets, songs and laws. What happened was not a discovery. It was a meeting, usually an unequal one.

Six reasons people set out

People did not sail into unknown water for one reason. They sailed for a tangle of reasons, and the reason a king wrote in a royal order was often not the reason the sailors climbed aboard.

Here are the six that come up again and again. Most real voyages had three or four of them at once.

Pure wanting to know

Sometimes the honest answer is: they wanted to know. Ibn Battuta left Tangier at 21 for the pilgrimage to Mecca and simply kept going for about 29 years, across Africa, Arabia, India, the Maldives and China. Cook's first voyage was sent to watch Venus cross the Sun from Tahiti, a measurement that helped work out the Sun's distance. Curiosity rarely paid for a voyage alone; it usually travelled with money.

Reasons come first and belong to the people setting out: the price of pepper in Lisbon, a king who does not want to be beaten by a rival, a pilgrim heading for Mecca, curiosity, a storm.

Consequences come afterwards and often reach people who never boarded a ship: smallpox in the Americas, a trading company collecting taxes in Bengal, millions of Africans taken across the Atlantic by force.

The hardest cards are the ones that are both. Slavery began as a consequence of the Atlantic crossings and then became a reason for thousands more voyages. When a card feels like both, that is worth noticing, not a mistake.

Chapter 03

The Indian Ocean was already a busy place

Here is the part most story books leave out.

Long before a European ship rounded Africa, the Indian Ocean was one of the busiest trading regions on Earth. Ships ran between east Africa, Arabia, Gujarat, the Malabar coast, Sri Lanka, Bengal, Southeast Asia and China. Merchants from a dozen communities lived in each other's port cities. There were agreed ways of weighing goods, settling disputes and paying customs duties.

We are not guessing. A Greek-speaking merchant in Egypt wrote a practical handbook to this ocean, the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, about about 40-70 CE. That is roughly 1,971 years ago, about fourteen centuries before da Gama. It lists ports down the African coast and along India, what each one buys and sells, and which month to sail.

So when Vasco da Gama's three ships arrived at Calicut in 1498, they were not opening a sea. They were arriving, rather late, at a party that had been going for well over a thousand years.

    The Periplus A merchant's handbook lists ports, goods and sailing months from Egypt to the Malabar coast. Roman gold coins are found in south India.
  5. c. 800-1200
    Arab and Swahili networks Dhows link Basra, Muscat, Gujarat, Malabar and the Swahili coast. Kilwa, Mombasa and Calicut grow rich.

    A wreck full of proof A ship carrying about 60,000 Chinese ceramic pieces sinks off Indonesia. Found in 1998, it shows Arab-style ship-building carrying Chinese cargo, on an Indian Ocean route.

Why Pepper, cotton cloth, horses and dates. Arab, Gujarati and Malabari merchants ran this route long before any European ship arrived, timing it by the monsoon winds.

What it changed

A trading world with its own money, laws, languages and pilots. When Europeans arrived they did not find an empty sea; they joined a crowded one, and later tried to control it.

Why the winds decided the timetable

Over the Indian Ocean the wind turns right around twice a year. From June to September the south-west monsoon blows from the sea towards India, bringing the rains; from October to March the north-east monsoon blows the other way, from the land out to sea. Sailing ships had no engines, so captains waited for the right season: out with one monsoon, home with the other. A voyage could take months of waiting in port — and traders from India, Arabia, East Africa and China had used this rhythm for centuries before European ships arrived.

Chapter 04

Finding your way with no map and no satellite

Out of sight of land, in every direction, the sea looks exactly the same. So how did anyone know where they were?

They used four things, and they used them together, because each one on its own is not enough:

  1. The sky. The Sun by day, the Pole Star and other stars by night.
  2. Instruments. Simple tools for measuring how high a star is above the horizon.
  3. The compass. A magnetised needle that points roughly north even under thick cloud.
  4. Memory and reckoning. Knowing your speed, your heading and how long you have held it, and writing it all down hour by hour.

None of that told a sailor everything. It got them close, and close was usually enough to find a coast they recognised.

Chapter 05

Four voyages worth knowing

Thousands of voyages matter. These four are worth knowing first, because between them they show the whole range: a fleet that went to show off and then stopped; a voyage that connected two trading worlds; a voyage that went the wrong way and changed two continents; and a voyage that proved the oceans join up.

Notice as you read: none of these was a lone hero. Every one depended on local pilots, borrowed charts, older knowledge and a great many people whose names nobody wrote down.

Four voyages, in order

  1. 1405-1433
    Zheng He's treasure fleets Ming China sends 7 fleets west over 28 years. Ming records give the first voyage 317 ships and about 27,800 men. Then the court stops them.
  2. 1492
    Columbus crosses the Atlantic Three ships leave Palos on 3 August and sight land on 12 October: 70 days, of which 36 were the open-ocean run from the Canaries.
  3. 1497-1498
    Da Gama reaches Calicut Lisbon to Calicut in 316 days, including 93 days out of sight of land in the south Atlantic and a 26-day crossing from Malindi with a local pilot.

Chapter 06

What came back: the food on your plate

Here is a thing worth sitting with for a moment.

There were no chillies in India before about 1500. No tomatoes. No potatoes. No cashew trees, no groundnuts, no papaya, no guava, no maize.

Every one of those plants is American. They grew in Mexico, Peru, Brazil and the Caribbean, and they reached India, Africa, China and Europe on ships, in the decades after 1492. Historians call this two-way movement of plants, animals and diseases the Columbian exchange.

It cuts both ways. Wheat, rice, sugarcane, bananas, coffee, oranges, horses, cattle, pigs and chickens went the other way, from Europe, Africa and Asia into the Americas, where none of them had existed either.

Almost nobody set out to make this happen. It is the largest accidental consequence in the whole story.

The surprise for most Indian learners is the first group. Chilli, potato, tomato and cashew all feel completely Indian, and all four arrived after 1500. The surprise going the other way is that cloves and nutmeg grew, for most of history, on a handful of small islands and nowhere else on Earth, which is exactly why fleets sailed halfway round the world for them.

Chapter 07

What else travelled: the hard part

Disease. This is the largest single consequence of 1492, and the one nobody intended.

People in Europe, Africa and Asia had been sharing diseases for thousands of years, along the trade routes you met in chapter three. Smallpox, measles, influenza and typhus were terrible there, but many survivors had some immunity, and populations had adjusted over centuries.

The peoples of the Americas had been separated from all of that for many thousands of years. When these diseases arrived on ships, they met populations with no previous exposure at all. Epidemics ran ahead of the ships, sometimes reaching villages years before any European did.

How many died? Nobody counted, so every number is a reconstruction from later records, archaeology and modelling, and historians genuinely disagree. Most estimates say the population of the Americas fell by somewhere around about 85-95% on most estimates over the century after 1492. A widely cited recent study puts it at roughly 60 million people in 1492 falling to about 6 million by 1600.

Whichever estimate you take, it is one of the largest losses of human life in recorded history, and most of it was caused by germs rather than weapons. War, forced labour and the destruction of farming made it far worse: sick people cannot plant, and hungry people die of illnesses they might otherwise survive.

Slavery. The second consequence was deliberate.

The plantations that Europeans set up in the Caribbean, Brazil and North America grew sugar, tobacco and cotton, and they needed enormous amounts of labour. With local populations collapsing, European traders turned to Africa.

Between 1501 and 1866, that is 365 years, an estimated 12.5 million African people were put onto ships bound for the Americas. About 10.7 million arrived. The difference, roughly 1.8 million people, or about 14.4%, died during the crossing.

These are not guesses from thin air. Historians have gathered the records of more than 36,000 individual slaving voyages: ships' papers, port registers, insurance documents, sale records. The estimates come from counting.

Behind every number is a person with a name, a family and a home they never saw again. Enslaved people resisted constantly: they ran, they rebelled, they kept languages, music, food and faith alive. The revolution in Haiti, begun in 1791, was led by enslaved people and ended with an independent country.

Abolition, when it came, came slowly and was fought for hard, by formerly enslaved people, by campaigners, and through rebellion.

India. The pattern here is different, and it takes about two hundred and fifty years to unfold.

It starts with trade. The Portuguese took Goa in 1510. The English East India Company got its charter in 1600, the Dutch VOC in 1602, the French company in 1664. All of them came to buy: pepper, cotton cloth, silk, indigo, saltpetre. Indian cotton textiles were the finest in the world, and Europe could not make anything like them.

Then it changes. The companies built fortified warehouses, then hired soldiers to guard them, then used those soldiers in India's own political quarrels. After the battle of Plassey in 1757 and Buxar in 1764, the East India Company was granted the diwani of Bengal in 1765: the right to collect the land revenue of one of the richest regions on Earth.

At that point a trading company had become a government, with an army, taxes and courts, and no one in Britain or Bengal had exactly decided that it should.

From 259 years after da Gama's arrival to independence in 1947 is a long story of that power growing. British rule replaced Company rule in 1858. Indian handloom weavers lost their markets as machine-made British cloth, protected by tariffs, took over. Famines killed millions. And out of all of it grew the movement that took the country's government back.

    Crown rule After the rebellion of 1857, the British government takes over from the Company directly.

    The Salt March A 385 km walk over 25 days to make salt from the sea, breaking a law that made it illegal. Mass civil disobedience follows.

    Independence 182 years after the diwani, India governs itself again, and writes its own constitution.

Exploration was good for whom?

Not was it good or bad, which has no useful answer, but good for whom, bad for whom, and how do we know. Ask it of every voyage and the fog clears fast.

Nine groups of people are sorted into mostly gained, mostly paid and both, at different times.

Clear gains: the Portuguese crown and Indian farmers who got chillies and potatoes, two hardy new crops.

Clear costs: enslaved Africans, Caribbean peoples after 1492, Andean mine workers under forced labour drafts, and Venetian merchants cut out of the spice route.

The most interesting bin is both. Bengal weavers were the best-paid textile workers in the world in the 1600s and had lost their markets by the 1800s. The Zamorin of Calicut was rich from the pepper trade, then faced armed fleets demanding exclusive terms. Ordinary sailors got wages and a share of the cargo, if they survived, and on Magellan's expedition about 93 in every 100 did not.

The point of the game: the same event can be a gain and a loss at once, and can flip from one to the other over time.

How we know any of this

You have just read a lot of confident sentences about things that happened five hundred years ago. Where does any of it come from?

Historians of exploration work from six main kinds of evidence, and each kind is good at some things and useless at others.

Six kinds of evidence, and what each one is good for

  1. Step 01Ships' logs and journalsWritten on board

    Daily records of course, weather and distance. Excellent for dates and routes. Written by one side, usually for a boss, so the shore appears only through the writer's eyes.

  2. Step 02Port and customs recordsWritten by officials

    Who paid duty on what, and when. Boring, and therefore honest: nobody writes a heroic customs ledger. Very good for what was actually traded.

  3. Step 03Letters, charters and treatiesGovernments and companies

    What people were told to do, and what they agreed. Shows intention, which is often different from what happened.

  4. Step 04Archaeology and shipwrecksDug up or dived on

    Physical objects that cannot lie about what they are. The Belitung wreck, found in 1998, held about 60,000 Chinese ceramics in an Arab-built ship.

  5. Step 05Oral histories and traditionsRemembered and passed on

    Often the only surviving account from the shore's side. Sometimes written down centuries later, which affects the detail but not necessarily the substance.

  6. Step 06Science on old materialMeasured in a lab

    Tree rings, ice cores, pollen, DNA of crops, isotopes in bones. Can date a voyage's effects on farming and forests without any document at all.

Discovery
Finding something genuinely unknown to anyone. Use it carefully about places, which usually had people in them already.
Encounter
A meeting between groups who did not know each other before.
Example: 1498 at Calicut was an encounter, not a discovery.
Latitude
How far north or south of the equator you are, in degrees. Measurable from the Sun or the Pole Star.
Example: Kozhikode is about 11 degrees north.
Longitude
How far east or west you are, in degrees. Much harder to measure: it needs an accurate clock.
Monsoon
A wind that reverses direction between summer and winter, and the rains it brings. The Indian Ocean's sailing timetable.
Compass
A magnetised needle that settles pointing roughly north, so you can steer in cloud or at night.
Kamal
A wooden card on a knotted cord, used by Indian Ocean sailors to measure a star's height above the horizon.
Astrolabe
An instrument for measuring the angle of the Sun or a star above the horizon.
Columbian exchange
The two-way movement of crops, animals and diseases between the Americas and the rest of the world after 1492.
Trading company
A company given a charter by its government to trade in a region, sometimes with its own ships, forts and soldiers.
Immunity
A body's ability to resist a disease it has met before. The peoples of the Americas had none to smallpox or measles.
Indigenous
Belonging to a place from long before outsiders arrived.
Estimate
A carefully worked-out figure that is not a count. Good estimates come with a range.
Example: Population estimates for 1492 range from 8 to over 100 million.

The short version

  • Exploration is travelling to find out what is there. Discovery is a loaded word for places: they nearly always had people in them already. Encounter is usually the honest one.
  • People set out for six overlapping reasons: curiosity, trade and wealth, religion and pilgrimage, escape and migration, rivalry between rulers, and accident. Most voyages had several at once.
  • The Indian Ocean was a busy, organised trading world for over a thousand years before Europeans arrived. The Periplus, a merchant's handbook, dates from about about 40-70 CE.
  • The monsoon reverses twice a year: south-west about June to September, north-east about November to February. It gave the ocean a timetable and made a round trip take roughly a year.
  • Navigation used the Pole Star and Sun for latitude, the compass for direction, the kamal, astrolabe and lead line for measuring, and careful dead reckoning. Longitude stayed unsolved for centuries.
  • Zheng He (1405-1433, 7 fleets), Columbus (1492), da Gama (Calicut, 20 May 1498, with a pilot hired at Malindi) and Magellan-Elcano (1,082 days round the world) are the four to know.
  • The Columbian exchange moved crops both ways: chilli, potato, tomato, maize and cashew are American, reaching India after early 1500s; wheat, sugarcane, coffee, horses and cattle went the other way.
  • Disease killed a large share of the Americas' population (most estimates about 85-95% on most estimates), and about 12.5 million African people were embarked on slaving ships between 1501 and 1866. Every such figure is a reconstruction, so it comes as a range.
  • In India, trading companies became rulers: charters in 1600 and 1602, the diwani of Bengal in 1765, Crown rule in 1858, independence in 1947. Always ask who gained and who paid.
  • We know all this from logs, port records, charters, archaeology, oral histories and laboratory science. The travellers' accounts survived far more often than the shore's.
